IIT Bombay's QR dog collars are going citywide in Mumbai
After a dog's viral classroom visit, IIT Bombay fitted its campus dogs with QR-code collars, and Mumbai's civic body is now rolling the idea out citywide.
Earlier this year, a dog wandered into a lecture hall at IIT Bombay, climbed onto a desk, and sat through class as if attendance were compulsory for him too. The video went viral, and the campus dog earned the nickname Dogesh Bhai.
IIT Bombay has since given Dogesh Bhai and its other campus dogs a more practical claim to fame: reflective collars fitted with QR codes linking to each dog's identity, location history and vaccination record.
Mumbai's civic body, the BMC, is now taking the idea citywide as part of its Rabies-Free 2030 initiative, fitting community dogs across the city with similar QR-enabled collars. A quick scan lets officials instantly confirm whether a dog has been vaccinated and sterilised.
For feeders and residents, it also means documented proof that a familiar neighborhood dog is already accounted for, cutting down on repeat captures and helping the city keep track of the strays it's working to protect.
