A Bronx pizza shop makes sure no one goes hungry
After feeding a hungry stranger a fresh slice instead of one from his trash, a Bronx pizzeria owner posted a sign offering free food to anyone who needs it.
Daniel Romano has run D'Romano's Pizza on East Tremont Avenue in the Throggs Neck section of the Bronx for years, part of a career in pizza that started when he was ten years old, working alongside his father in the South Bronx. Recently he noticed an elderly woman pulling a half-eaten slice out of his shop's trash can.
Romano walked over, took the discarded slice from her hands, and gave her a fresh one instead. He then wrote out a handwritten sign for his window: "To the people eating out of the garbage, I have more love for you than you think. Please tell me if you're hungry, I will give you a slice of pizza."
The sign, and the story behind it, quickly spread online and drew attention from across the country. Romano has said the gesture came from his late mother, Carmela, who taught him that a person is always better able to make good decisions on a full stomach.
Since the story went viral, people from far beyond the Bronx have been calling the shop offering to help cover meals for others, turning one quiet act of kindness into a wider chain of generosity.
